Privacy Policy

Summary
The Property Tax Desk collects minimal data on readers. We use Google Analytics 4 (GA4) for aggregate traffic analysis. We do not collect personally-identifying information through forms or any other channel. We do not have a leadgen business model, so we have no incentive to collect homeowner contact information. We do not share or sell any data to third parties for marketing purposes.
This policy explains in detail what we collect, why, and what your rights are.
Information we collect automatically (analytics)
We use Google Analytics 4 (GA4) to measure aggregate traffic patterns:
- Pages viewed (which articles get traffic, how long readers spend, which sections they engage with)
- General geographic location (country, state, city — derived from IP address; no street-level geolocation)
- Device and browser information (operating system, browser type, screen resolution)
- Referrer information (search engines, other websites linking to us, direct visits)
- Session-level interaction patterns (clicks, scrolls, page transitions)
GA4 uses cookies and a unique anonymous identifier to track sessions. The identifier is not tied to any personally-identifying information. We do not enable Google Signals (cross-device tracking) on this property.
GA4 data is retained for 14 months and then automatically deleted from Google's systems.
The site's GA4 measurement ID is G-0EHE1EYZ9F. The site uses Google's standard gtag.js analytics tag.
Information we do NOT collect
- No email addresses through forms (we have no signup forms, newsletter forms, or comment forms)
- No phone numbers
- No street addresses
- No names
- No financial information (no credit cards, no bank accounts, no payment processing)
- No SSN or government identifier numbers
- No property identification numbers tied to individual readers
The site does not have user accounts, login systems, or membership functionality.
Cookies
Cookies set by this site:
- Google Analytics cookies (
_ga, _ga_*) — for traffic measurement. Standard 24-month expiration.
- No advertising cookies set directly by us. Display ads served by Google AdSense (when enabled) may set their own cookies; these are governed by Google's privacy practices, not ours.
You can disable cookies in your browser settings. The site's content is fully readable with cookies disabled.
Advertising
The Property Tax Desk operates on Google AdSense display advertising. AdSense places ads in standard placements within content. AdSense uses cookies to serve relevant ads and measure performance. AdSense's data practices are governed by Google's privacy policies, available at policies.google.com/privacy.
You can opt out of personalized advertising via Google's Ads Settings: adssettings.google.com.
We do not have any other advertising relationships, affiliate networks, or paid-placement arrangements.
Third parties
The Property Tax Desk uses:
- Google Analytics 4 — for traffic measurement (data practices: policies.google.com/privacy)
- Google AdSense — for display advertising (data practices: same as above)
- Google Fonts — we load Newsreader and Public Sans fonts from Google Fonts (data practices: developers.google.com/fonts/faq/privacy)
- AWS S3 + CloudFront — for site hosting and content delivery (no user data is stored beyond the standard request logs CloudFront retains for security purposes)
We do not use Facebook Pixel, LinkedIn Insight Tag, Twitter conversion tracking, or any other social-platform tracking pixels.
What we do with the data
We use aggregate analytics to:
- Understand which content readers find useful (so we can prioritize updates and new coverage)
- Identify broken links and pages that aren't loading correctly
- Measure overall site traffic for editorial planning
- Plan Year-2 expansion coverage (which states are getting traffic helps us prioritize FL/MA/CT/PA/OH/GA additions)
We do NOT:
- Sell aggregate data to third parties
- Share aggregate data with property tax service companies, attorneys, real estate professionals, or any other third parties
- Use data to construct profiles of individual readers
- Use data to target homeowners for outreach (we have no outreach apparatus)
Your rights
You can:
- Disable cookies in your browser settings
- Opt out of GA4 measurement by installing Google's Analytics opt-out browser add-on
- Opt out of personalized advertising via Google Ads Settings
- Request data deletion by contacting us — though note that we collect no personally-identifying data, so deletion requests will essentially confirm we have nothing tied to you
Children's privacy
The Property Tax Desk is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect any data about children under 13. If you believe a child has accessed the site in violation of this principle, contact us and we will delete any related data (which, given our minimal-data approach, is unlikely to exist).
California residents (CCPA / CPRA)
California Consumer Privacy Act / California Privacy Rights Act:
- Right to know: you can request information about what we collect (this page itself documents that)
- Right to delete: as above; we hold no personally-identifying data
- Right to opt out of sale: we do not sell personal information
EU/UK residents (GDPR)
The Property Tax Desk is hosted in the United States and primarily serves U.S. homeowners. Our data collection is minimal. The legal basis for our analytics processing is legitimate interest in measuring traffic to improve content. Contact us with GDPR data subject access requests, though as noted we hold no personally-identifying data.
Policy changes
We may update this policy as our practices evolve (e.g., if we add features that change data collection). We will note the effective date at the top of the page. Material changes will be flagged for at least 30 days before taking effect.
